In this anthology published by Carbonation Press, today’s finest poets, writers, and artists, from the U.S. and beyond, reflect on Adrienne Rich’s words about “our country moving closer to its own truth and dread.” From a review by Misfit Magazine: “Winter in America (Again: Poets Respond to 2024 Election is a much-needed update of Carolyn Forche’s classic anthology, Against Forgetting: Twentieth Century Poetry of Witness.” Along with Forche, 200 contributors respond in the sequel to a world still fractured by post-election events. In the spirit of Gil Scott-Heron’s song, “Winter in America,” they compose roadmaps toward new forms of resistance and witness.

A new call for poetry, prose, and art
A Deeper Reflection
The first Winter in America anthology sought to be reflective rather than reactive, and to promote compassion in the face of division. With Winter in America (Still, we continue that spirit—calling for work that looks deeply into the aftermath of the 2024 election and its ongoing social, cultural, and personal consequences.
We welcome work that meditates on the current political/cultural situation or as expression that emerges from it:
Poetry
Prose
Artwork
Cross-genre or intermedia work (include link to audio or video if you’d like)
Voices across aesthetics and backgrounds
Abstract submissions welcome, e.g. work that is non-topical.
This anthology is not about headlines, but about the quieter reverberations of political life in our daily experience—reflections that help us see not only the election’s impact, but also what it reveals about who we are, and who we might yet become.
“This poet’s job is not to tell you what it is like, but to make a poem…Not trying to use your poems to prove a point, or address an argument. Not to try to control what they’re (the poems) are doing…but rather to be a kind of audience listening to where the poem is going to go…the practice of outside…Try to forget your own voice…and listen hard for what the language is saying… you yourself are the audience, hearing a voice you’ve trained your ear to receive (emphasis added)…”
